Instructions for translators

This project is used for the translation of the AntennaPod website. New source strings are automatically pushed to Weblate. Once in a while we review the translations and push them to our website. Once quality and coverage is deemed high enough, we (manually) enable a language on the live website.

Please follow the translation guidelines below. This will help ensure accuracy and avoid mistakes.

  1. Machine translation: Please do not use machine translation without reviewing and editing.

  2. Understand the context: Try the app and understand the context before you start translating.

  3. Be consistent: Use consistent terminology, tone, and style (grammar, punctuation, capitalization) throughout the translation.

  4. Be concise: Translations should be concise and to the point. Avoid using long sentences or complex words that may be difficult to understand.

  5. Use simple language: Use simple language that is easy to understand. Avoid using jargon or technical terms.

  6. Be culturally sensitive: Avoid using language that may be offensive or inappropriate. Use gender-neutral language whenever possible.

  7. Proofread: Always proofread your translations before submitting them.

  8. Be aware of character limits: Make sure your translations fit into the space available.

  9. Communicate with developers: Use our forum to communicate with developers to ensure that translations are implemented correctly.

  10. Get feedback: Get feedback from other translators to improve translations over time. If you are unsure about a translation, use our forum to get clarification.

    Do you want a new language to be added? Please request it on our forum. The reason that we have this process is that we want to know key translators of our website, in order to facilitate our quality control process. Thank you for your understanding and interest!

When first getting started to AntennaPod development, we recommend to pick an issue with the ['Good first issue' label](https://github.com/AntennaPod/AntennaPod/labels/Good%20first%20issue) on GitHub. Before you start working on an issue, make sure that it does not have the 'Needs: Triage' or 'Needs: Decision' label. Those labels mean that the feature was not reviewed by the core AntennaPod team yet.

Out of the estimated [world population](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population) of 7.9 billion people, 'only' 1.5 billion [speak English](https://www.ethnologue.com/insights/ethnologue200/). This may not mean much per se. But if anything, we can conclude that making AntennaPod available in more languages, makes the app accessible to more people. As a side benefit, localising the app also helps our project grow beyond the current main userbases (Germany and the US).
Van de geschatte [wereldbevolking](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wereldbevolking) van 7,9 miljard mensen, spreken er 'slechts' 1,35 miljard [Engels](https://www.ethnologue.com/guideinsights/ethnologue200/). Dit betekent op zich misschien niet veel. Maar als we iets kunnen concluderen, dan is het wel dat het beschikbaar maken van AntennaPod in meer talen de app toegankelijk maakt voor meer mensen. Bovendien, het vertalen van de app helpt ons project ook om te groeien buiten de twee huidige belangrijkste gebruikersgroepen (in Duitsland en de VS).

In addition to the app and website, also the images in the app stores can be translated. They have screenshots and texts. Because there is very limited space we use a manual process with trial and error. Please let us know on the forum if you want to help with that. Because localized app store listings are more likely to be downloaded, help is very much welcome!
Naast de app en de website kunnen ook de afbeeldingen in de app stores worden vertaald. De afbeeldingen hebben screenshots en teksten. Omdat de ruimte in zeer beperkt is, gebruiken we een handmatig proces met verschillende testrondes. Laat een berichtje achter op het forum als je hierbij wilt helpen. In appstores worden apps met vertaalde afbeeldingen eerder gedownload, dus hulp is zeer welkom!
