Instructions for translators

Thanks for helping to translate Ceno Browser!

To get started:

  1. Make an account on Weblate or sign in with your Github or Gitlab ID. Note: Account creation is not required, but you will only be able to suggest translations in this case

  2. Visit the Censorship.no project page - which lists all components and their strings (including Android app strings, the web browser extension, the User Manual and the website).

  3. On the Censorship.no project page's 'Languages' tab, choose the language you want to work on, or -- in case the language doesn't exist yet -- initiate a new language by selecting a component from the main project page and clicking on the "Start a new translation" button. Please note that we can't support shipping arbitrary translations with our published materials unless they have a reviewer (see below).

  4. Please contact the Ceno team at support AT censorship DOT no if you are interested in becoming a reviewer for translation(s) in your language(s).

  5. If you plan to translate the User Manual, please get acquainted with Markdown first (e.g. with this cheatsheet).

Translation process
  • Translations can be made directly.
  • Translation suggestions can be made.
  • Translations are reviewed by dedicated reviewers.
  • Any authenticated user can contribute.
  • The translation uses bilingual files.

If you're running Ceno from a region with open access to the internet, you'll access content the same way you would on a mainstream browser. The benefit is that you can choose to help other Ceno users while you browse by becoming a Bridge.

That's where sharing the web comes in: users with access to content or a stable network help to collect and share content with those who don't. This means, for example, that a Ceno user in Azerbaijan can read a blocked article if another Ceno user in Italy has pulled up the same one. This is made possible by people running Ceno from countries with more reliable and open access to the internet – we call these users "Bridges". Bridges can share content with people using Ceno in heavily restricted networks.

There are many tools available to people who face internet restrictions, but these tools often don't help people in the midst of internet shutdowns, blockages, VPN breaks and other disruptions.<br><b>Ceno is different.</b> People using Ceno Browser are able to access a library of saved internet content that continues to be available during service interruptions.
