  1. Make an account on Weblate or sign in with your Github or Gitlab ID. Note: Account creation is not required, but you will only be able to suggest translations in this case

## What is sideloading?


Sideloading is the installation of an application on a mobile device without using the device's official distribution methods such as the Google Play Store, Apple App Store, Microsoft Store, etc.


Traditionally, sideloading has been a term used to describe the action of moving files between two devices, typically achieved through a wired or wireless connection. However, it's also possible for someone to employ a memory card or an external storage drive to accomplish this file transfer between devices. For instance, a user could move documents from one PC to another using a cable connection. In this context, sideloading is distinct from downloading or uploading, which involve the transfer of files between local devices and remote servers.


With the advent of smartphones, sideloading now primarily denotes the action of installing apps on devices via unofficial sources. Although commonly associated with mobile devices, sideloading can also pertain to other devices like laptops or desktop computers. [F-droid](https://f-droid.org/en/) is one of the key trusted sources of free and open source apps available for sideloading.


## Android instructions


To sideload an app, you first need to download the “Android Package File” (.APK). You can download it directly to your Android device, but some may find it necessary to download the file to a desktop computer and then transfer it to the phone using a USB cable, Bluetooth, or a cloud storage provider like Dropbox or Google Drive.


Locate the file on your phone. Use the Downloads app to find it. Tap on the file name; if a warning pops up asking for your permission to install it, give it permission to do so. If asked, click “Install”.


The app should now install unless there is a compatibility issue with your specific Android device.

dComms means decentralised communications.


We suggest that you pre-install and test the following applications that can work autonomously and regardless of external internet shutdowns. ### Q: What is the relevance of the dComms project?


**A:** dComms stands for decentralized communications. We have created platforms for Internet users in Ukraine to communicate with each other in the event of access restrictions or censorship of the Internet - what is happening now in the temporarily occupied territories (TOT).


dComms offers Ukrainian users decentralized Internet services such as Mastodon, Matrix, and Ceno Browser. These services are controlled by the users themselves, unlike the social networks of tech giants that are able to regulate free communication on their platforms.


The services offered by dComms allow users to communicate based on open, free protocols. These services are hosted locally on servers across Ukraine. An analogy: it was similar in the early 2000s, when people started connecting to the Internet at home on local networks.


### Q:Which of the offered services are the most popular in Ukraine?


**A:** Mastodon instances are actively growing in Ukraine due to the migration of users from Twitter/X. The most popular servers are [Kyiv's](https://social.kyiv.dcomm.net.ua/), [Lviv's](https://social.lviv.dcomm.net.ua/), and [Kharkiv's](https://social.kharkiv.dcomm.net.ua/).

Ceno Browser for Android allows you to circumvent censorship and access content shared by others in a distributed cache. The more the browser is used in the main territories of Ukraine, the more access to Ukrainian content users in the temporarily occupied territories will have.


### Q:Who is behind the dComms project?


**A:** The dComms project is being implemented by eQualitie, a Canadian digital security organization that specializes in the development and distribution of free and open source software. eQualitie has been operating in Ukraine since 2014. In addition to dComms, the organization currently offers Ukrainian media and NGOs DDoS protection ([via Deflect](http://deflect.ca/)) and supports the [Nadiyno Digital Security Helpline](https://nadiyno.org/) in cooperation with Internews Ukraine.


### Q: What is the principle of decentralization?


**A:** Decentralization means the Internet is controlled by many. It’s millions of devices linked together in an open network. No one actor can own it, control it, or switch it off for everyone.


Decentralized services are not connected to a single managing server, as is the case for Viber, Telegram, Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, etc. Accordingly, dComms services cannot be disabled by simply turning off the corresponding switches on a single main server.


The Internet and the World Wide Web remain the largest decentralized communication system humanity has ever seen. This was very much part of the design: the inventors of the Web wanted all people to be able to create and access information. ## The purpose of dComms


dComms ([https://dcomm.net.ua](https://dcomm.net.ua/)) is a project to create an alternative communication platform for Internet users in Ukraine in cases of access restriction or censorship on the network. dComms was launched by Canadian organization [eQualitie](https://equalit.ie/) in February 2022 in response to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.


dComms offers Ukrainian users decentralized Internet services such as Mastodon, Matrix, Ceno Browser and Briar. Users themselves have control over these services, unlike the social networks of tech giants that can limit communication on their platforms.


We offer a list of various services that allow you to communicate using an open and free protocol - these services are located on local servers in Ukraine (an analogy: it looks like the early 2000s when people started connecting to the Internet at home via local networks).


## How does it work?


Following a few simple steps (downloading apps/choosing servers/registering for services), you can keep in touch with each other, with friends and relatives abroad, and gain access to the external Internet in case the usual methods of communication stop working.


For services such as Mastodon or Matrix, the following principles are inherent: decentralization and federation. In simple words: these tools / social networks do not have a single server that manages their work, like Viber, Telegram, Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, etc. Accordingly, decentralized services cannot be disabled by clicking on the switch.


**Note:** To use decentralized services during an external Internet outage, you must download them in advance. Local servers work on local hostings, and their settings can be controlled. On [https://dcomm.net.ua](https://dcomm.net.ua/) you will find several tools included in the Fediverse - a union of decentralized services that operate on the principle of federation: having an account in one service, a user can interact with other services without registering on them.


**Important!** Server owners CANNOT access private chats they are not members of. Server owner access is limited to public chats only.


Currently the site features several services from a large list of decentralized Internet services or the Fediverse - primarily Mastodon and Matrix. This list will gradually expand. If you would like to propose any new services to dComms, please submit a request to us on Github: [https://github.com/censorship-no/dcomms](https://github.com/censorship-no/dcomms)


The offered services are located on servers in Ukrainian local data centers - from Lviv and Rivne to Kharkiv and Odesa. If you have access to one of the servers, you can communicate with each other even if the Internet connection required to use other popular instant messengers such as Telegram and Whatsapp do not work in your area. In the event of a power outage, the services can still work if you are on the network of the local dComms hoster.


**Note!** dComms does not share your data or information about you with any private companies or authorities.


## Why is this needed?


We target two main target audiences:

- Users in the main territory of Ukraine, for whom data privacy issues are important, service algorithms are clear, and the use of decentralized Internet services is an alternative to the products of tech giants;
- Users in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, where there are privacy and security risks as well as restrictions on access to the Internet, taking into account censorship by the aggressor country (blocking Ukrainian sites, filtering traffic).
