A good example is how the [FreeBSD](https://www.freebsd.org/) ports work. Port descriptions contain a list of [`MASTER_SITES`](https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/porters-handbook/makefile-distfiles.html#makefile-master_sites), a list of files to be retrieved in `DISTFILES`, and a `distinfo` file with cryptographic checksums for each of these files. The FreeBSD infrastructure ensures that a copy of all *distfiles* are kept available on a mirror network. When building a port, the files will be downloaded from there if the original *master site* is unreachable.

[Vagrant](https://www.vagrantup.com/) is another tool, written in Ruby, that can run virtual machines with VirtualBox. It can also be used to get a controlled build environment. The upside of Vagrant and VirtualBox is that they work on Mac OS X and Windows, and so this might help more users to actually check that a build has not been tempered with.
