Overview

Project website scoutradioz.com
Instructions for translators

Scoutradioz is a web app designed for FIRST Robotics Competition teams to collect valuable metrics about the performance capabilities of teams competing at district and regional events. The data collected can then be viewed and analyzed in real time by any teams, spectators, friends, or family members anywhere around the world.

FIRST teams and their members and friends and family are from all over the globe. We would like to be able to share our application with people in their preferred languages, and especially reach people who are not fluent in English. So we are looking for volunteers who can help us translate the application into as many languages as possible.

Translation contributions will be merged through GitHub. Note that if you want to keep your personal/account email private, set a different commit email in the user settings.

Strings may include variables, with the syntax {variableName}, e.g. "You're assigned to team {team} on the {alliance} alliance.". These will be replaced with data, e.g. "You're assigned to team 35 on the blue alliance". Translate the text around these variables, but keep the variables in English. You can move the variables around as appropriate grammatically, e.g. "Vous êtes affecté à l'équipe {team} de l'alliance {alliance}.".

Additionally, strings may include basic markdown, e.g. asterisks for italics/bold for emphasis. Only use markdown when translating strings that already have markdown, because the website code will only parse markdown on those strings that are expected to have it.

A small handful of strings also contain inline HTML, e.g. <span> and <a> tags. The same rules apply as for markdown, and please make sure your translated strings have the same HTML. For example, for the string "Before alliance selection, you and your team lead(s) can mark your preferred teams on <a class=\"link\" href=\"/manage/allianceselection\" target=\"_blank\">this page</a>.". please translate the text "Before alliance selection, you and your team lead(s) can mark your preferred teams on" and "this page", but leave alone the text inside the <brackets>.

Lastly, strings may contain the pattern |> in the middle. This is for tooltips. The text before |> will be the text that displays normally, and the text after |> will be the tooltip that appears when the user hovers or taps on the text. For example, "Capability |> 90th Percentile" will render the text "Capability", with a tooltip containing the text "90th Percentile". Unlike markdown, you may add tooltips in places where the English version does not contain tooltips. Say, for example, an English string is very short and is placed somewhere in the UI that requires a small amount of space. If the translated version of that string is much longer and causes the UI to break, you may wish to have an abbreviated version display normally, with the full string as a tooltip.
