The White Noise tool can be used to help you fall asleep while camping or backpacking.

## Usage
Tap the white noise button to toggle the white noise on and off. A notification will be displayed while the white noise is playing, and you can tap it at any time to stop the white noise.

## Sleep timer
You can set a sleep timer to automatically stop the white noise after a certain amount of time. To set the sleep timer, enable the sleep timer switch and enter the amount of time you want the white noise to play for. The sleep timer will start counting down as soon as you start the white noise.

## Quick action
You can enable the White Noise quick action in the settings for the tab you want it on.

To use the quick action, tap the White Noise quick action button to toggle it on or off.

The Whistle tool can be used to signal for help. When using the whistle, it is recommended to turn your volume up to the maximum or connect to an external speaker. As with any tool in Trail Sense, it is always best to carry a real whistle with you.

Tap the SOS button to continuously play the SOS distress signal (3 short, 3 long, 3 short).

## Help
Tap the help button to continuously play the help distress signal (3 long).

The Weather tool can be used to roughly predict the weather.

## Weather prediction
The weather prediction appears at the top of your screen. This does not use the Internet and factors in pressure history, historical (30-year average) temperatures, and the clouds from the Clouds tool. It also attempts to estimate when the weather change will occur, displayed beneath the prediction. The accuracy of the time frame depends on if the clouds indicate a weather front; if it's detected, an approximate time will be displayed, otherwise, it's more vague, like "soon" or "later."

If the weather monitor is on, it records pressure history automatically. Otherwise, pressure updates only occur when you open the Weather tool. For accuracy, it's best to record pressure every 30 minutes.

You can adjust prediction sensitivity in Settings > Weather > Forecast sensitivity. Higher sensitivity may detect more patterns but might yield more false predictions.

## Weather monitor
The weather monitor runs in the background to record pressure history. Enable it by clicking the start icon at the bottom-right. This causes a notification to appear with the current prediction and an option to stop the weather monitor. You can also stop it by clicking the stop icon in the bottom-right.

To change the recording frequency, click the time under the weather monitor label at the bottom left and enter a new interval.

For better accuracy, grant Trail Sense Location permission to determine your elevation via GPS. This helps convert pressure to sea level pressure, improving prediction accuracy.

In Settings > Weather, you can customize the notification to show:
- **Pressure**: Displays the current pressure.
- **Temperature**: Displays the current temperature (refer to Thermometer guide for details).

You can also enable daily weather notifications in Settings > Weather > Daily weather notification. Without the weather monitor being active, you won't receive these notifications. The timing of this notification is configurable in Settings > Weather > Daily weather time.

You can disable weather monitor notifications in Android's notification settings for Trail Sense.

## Storm alert
If the weather monitor is active, Trail Sense can notify you of storms. Enable this in Settings > Weather > Storm alert. You can adjust the sensitivity in Settings > Weather > Storm sensitivity. Higher sensitivity might trigger false alerts, while lower sensitivity could miss some storms.

## Weather details
The Weather tool also provides more information about the current and predicted weather.

### Alerts
The Weather tool displays alerts when a storm is detected or historical temperatures suggest hot or cold conditions.

### Pressure
A pressure history chart is displayed at the top of the screen. Falling pressure may indicate an incoming storm, rising pressure suggests clearing weather, and steady pressure indicates no significant changes. The current pressure and its tendency (change over time) are listed below the chart.

The current pressure system is also displayed. Low pressure often means poor weather, while high pressure indicates fair conditions. Clicking on it provides a description of the pressure system.

You can change the history duration in Settings > Weather > "Pressure history".

### Temperature
The current temperature, sourced from historical data or the onboard thermometer, is shown in the weather list. Daily high/low temperatures are also provided using historical data. Clicking on the current temperature reveals a temperature history chart, while clicking on high/low temperatures displays a 24-hour temperature prediction chart based on historical temperatures.

### Humidity
If your device has a humidity sensor, the current humidity is displayed. Clicking on it reveals a humidity history chart.

### Clouds
The last logged cloud type appears in the weather list. Clicking on it provides a description of the cloud type.

### Weather front
The current weather front is displayed in the weather list. Fronts typically indicate weather changes and are often associated with precipitation and wind. Clicking on it provides a description of the weather front.

## Exporting weather data
You can export the recorded weather data to a CSV file with Settings > Weather > Export weather records.

## Quick action
You can enable the Weather Monitor quick action in the settings for the tab you want it on.

To use the quick action, tap the Weather Monitor quick action button to toggle it on or off.

## Accuracy
The weather prediction is a best guess using available sensor data and may not be accurate. If Trail Sense says it is going to be clear but you see what appears to be storm clouds rolling in, trust your instincts - sometimes storms roll in with gradual changes in pressure. Seek shelter if you sense a storm approaching, regardless of Trail Sense's prediction.

Climate normals (historic temperatures) are based on the 30-year average of the historic data and indicate what the weather usually is. The actual values may differ for a variety of reasons but should remain fairly close to the historic values. Large differences are normally due to a storm or other weather event.

Historic temperatures are estimated using a custom 30-year "climate normal" model derived from the NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office - MERRA-2 data (1991 - 2020).

## Widgets
The following widgets can be placed on your device's homescreen or viewed in-app:

- **Weather**: Shows the current weather and temperature prediction.
- **Pressure**: Shows the current pressure and tendency arrow.
- **Pressure chart**: The pressure chart.

The Water Boil Timer tool helps you determine the necessary boiling time to make water safe for drinking, taking into account your current elevation since boiling time varies with elevation.

## Making water safe to drink
To ensure water is safe for consumption, you must first filter and then boil it. Please note that filtering and boiling will not render polluted water safe to drink. Follow these steps to make water potable:

1. Filter the water into a metal container.
2. Bring the water to a rolling boil.
3. Click the 'Start' button once the water reaches a rolling boil.
4. Your water is likely safe to drink when the timer expires.

By default, the timer utilizes your current elevation to calculate the required boiling time. Alternatively, you can manually select either a 1-minute or 3-minute duration using the buttons located at the bottom of the screen.

## Disclaimer
This tool uses recommendations from health organizations, but if done incorrectly or if the water is polluted you could still get sick. Use at your own risk.

The Turn Back tool can be used to alert you when to turn back on a hike to return at a specific time.

## Return time
You can set the return time by clicking the input field and selecting a time from the time picker. The return time is the time that you want to return back to your current location if you start the hike now.

Once the return time has been set, an alert will be displayed a little before halfway through the hike to remind you to turn back if you want to return on time. The time until the turn back time is displayed at the top of the screen.

### Return before dark
If you click the "Return before dark" button, the return time will be set to sunset. This is useful if you want to make sure you return before it gets dark.

## Cancel the alert
You can cancel the alert by clicking the "Cancel" button at the bottom of the screen. This will clear the return time and the alert.

The Triangulate Location tool can be used to determine the coordinates of a location using two known locations. This can be used to either determine your location if the GPS is not working, or to determine the coordinates of a location in the distance.

## Determine your location
If your GPS is not working and you want to determine your current location, you will first need to see two known locations. Ideally, these locations are at least 60 degrees apart for the best accuracy. The locations can be beacons or you can determine them using a map. For a guide on how to get the coordinates of a location from a map, see the 'Photo Maps' guide in the 'Calibrating from the Map Grid' section. Once you have the coordinates of the two known locations, you can use the following steps to determine your location:

1. Select 'My location' as the location to triangulate.
2. Enter the coordinates for the first known location and record the direction from where you are to that location as Location 1. You can click the camera icon on the right side of the direction field to sight the location using the camera.
3. Repeat for Location 2 using the second known location.
4. If your location can be determined, it will be displayed at the top of the screen.

## Determine a destination's location
If you are able to see a destination from multiple locations, you can use the Triangulate Location tool to determine the coordinates of the destination.

1. Select 'Destination' as the location to triangulate.
2. Record your location and record the direction from where you are to that location as Location 1. You can tap the GPS icon next to the location field to use your current location. You can click the camera icon on the right side of the direction field to sight the location using the camera.
3. Move to a new location that's at least 30 m / 100 ft from the first location and repeat for Location 2. You can put away your phone while you move; the tool will save what you entered.
5. If the destination can be determined, it will be displayed at the top of the screen.

## Triangulation map
As you enter locations, the map at the top of the screen will update to show the intersection of the two lines. You can use this to verify that the locations you entered are correct. The map always has North at the top.

## Share options
Once you triangulate a location, you have several options:

- **Beacon**: Create a beacon at the triangulated location. This will open the Beacons tool. For more information on beacons, see the 'Beacons' guide.
- **Navigate**: Navigate to the triangulated location. This will open the Navigation tool. For more information on navigation, see the 'Navigation' guide.
- **Share...**: Share the triangulated location. This will open the share menu, where you can copy the coordinates, share as a QR code, open in a map app, or share with another app (e.g. a text message).

## Reset
You can reset the tool by clicking the reset button at the bottom of the screen.

Trail Sense is composed of a number of tools that are designed for hiking, backpacking, camping, and geocaching.

## Bottom navigation
The Navigation, Weather (if available), and Astronomy tools are available in the bottom navigation bar by default. These tools are also available in the tool list.

You can change which tools (up to 7) appear in the bottom navigation in Settings > Tools > 'Bottom navigation slot'.

All other tools can be found in the Tools bottom navigation item on the far right.

## Tool list
The tool list can be accessed by tapping the Tools item in the bottom navigation bar. This will show a list of all tools available in Trail Sense.

Clicking on a tool will open it.

You can also long-press on a tool to see more options:
- **About**: Provides more details about what the tool does.
- **Pin/unpin**: Allows you to pin the tool to the top of the list.
- **User guide**: Opens the user guide for the tool.
- **Settings**: Opens the settings for the tool.
- **Experimental**: This will show tools that are still in development. These tools may not be fully functional. You can enable experimental tools in Settings > Experimental.

## Pinned tools
You can pin tools to the top of the tool list by long-pressing on a tool and selecting 'Pin'. This will make the tool appear at the top of the tool list. You can unpin a tool by long-pressing on it and selecting 'Unpin'.

You can also pin/unpin tools in bulk by tapping the edit icon to the right of the pinned tools header.

## Sorting tools
You can change the order of the tools by clicking the sort icon to the right of the tools header. This will allow you to sort by:
- **Name**: Sorts alphabetically by tool name.
- **Category**: Groups tools by category and sorts alphabetically within each category.

## Search
You can search for a specific tool using the search bar at the top of the tool list.

## User guide
A user guide is available for each tool. You can access the user guide by long-pressing on a tool and selecting 'User Guide'. You can also access the user guide by opening the 'User Guide' tool in the tool list.

## Settings
You can access the app settings by tapping the settings icon in the top right corner of the tool list. You can also access the settings by opening the 'Settings' tool in the tool list.

## Quick actions
You can enable quick actions at the top of the tool list in 'Settings > Tools > Quick actions'.

The quick actions can also be accessed by long pressing the bottom navigation. In addition to the quick actions you selected, you will also see contextual quick actions for the active tool, such as the user guide or settings.

You can find more information about each quick action by viewing the user guide for its respective tool. All quick actions that begin with 'Tool:' will open the tool when clicked.

## In-app widgets
In-app widgets can be accessed by long pressing the bottom navigation and changing to the "Widgets" tab. For the most part, these are the same widgets that you can place on your device's homescreen.

You can customize which widgets are shown in-app in 'Settings > Tools > In-app widgets'.

The Tides tool helps you keep track of tides at a specific location.

## Create a tide table
Before venturing into coastal areas, consult an official tide table for accurate times and water heights. Once you have this information, follow these steps to import it into Trail Sense's Tide tool:

1. Click the tides button in the top-right corner of the screen.
2. Tap the '+' button in the bottom-right corner.
3. Optionally, provide a name and location for the tide.
4. Adjust the tide frequency, indicating how many high tides typically occur in a day (most places have 2, known as Semidiurnal).
5. Scroll down to the tide table section.
6. Click either 'H' for high tide or 'L' for low tide to toggle between them.
7. Select 'Time not set' and enter the date and time of the tide.
8. Optionally, click the '-' in the 'Height' column to input the tide's height.
9. To add another tide, tap the '+' button in the top-left corner of the table.
10. You can delete a tide by clicking the 'X' icon to the right of the tide.
11. The tide estimation method can be changed by clicking the 'Estimation method' dropdown. Lunitidal interval uses the moon's position to estimate tides, and may be more accurate in some locations.
12. Save the tide table by clicking the checkmark in the top-right corner.

For the best accuracy, input all tides for each relevant day. Trail Sense will distinguish between entered and estimated tides on the tide chart.

### Estimation methods

- **Tide clock**: Assumes a fixed tidal cycle and requires at least one known tide to operate.
- **Lunitidal interval**: Uses the moon's position to estimate tides.
- **Auto**: Requires at least one known tide, it will automatically calculate the lunitidal interval.
- **Local**: Enter the lunitidal interval in hours and minutes for your location. This requires the location to be set, but does not require a tide table.
- **UTC/Greenwich**: Enter the lunitidal interval in hours and minutes for UTC/Greenwich. This does not require a location or tide table.
- **Tide model (auto)**: Estimates the tide near the entered location or if no location is entered, near you. For most locations, tides should be accurate to within an hour.

## Viewing a tide table
By default, the Tides tool displays the closest tide to your location when you open it. To change this, go to Settings > Tides > 'Show closest tide' to toggle between displaying the closest tide and the last tide you viewed.

To select a different tide, click the tides button in the top-right corner of the screen. This opens a list of all the tide tables you've created. Simply click on a tide to view it.

### Nearby tide
This shows the tide near your location using an offline tide modal. For most locations, tides should be accurate to within an hour, but always use official tide tables if possible. If you are not close to a tide you entered, this will be shown by default.

This may be inaccurate in some areas, especially in areas with complicated geography.

The nearby tide table can't be modified or deleted.

## Tide chart
The tide chart displays the tides for the current day. The X-axis represents time, while the Y-axis represents the tide height. A dot marks the current time on the chart. By default, today is selected, but you can change it by tapping the calendar icon at the top of the screen. Additionally, you can use the arrows to move to the next/previous date or long press the calendar to quickly jump to today's date.

At the top of the screen, you'll find the current tide level and, if available, the tide's height. A down arrow means a falling tide, while an up arrow means a rising tide.

The bottom of the screen displays a tide table for the current day. If the tide height is entered, it will be shown here; otherwise, it will be estimated. Estimated tides may not be entirely accurate and are based on the inputted tides.

## Editing a tide table
You can edit a tide table with the following steps:

1. Click the tides button in the top-right corner of the screen.
2. Click the menu button to the right of the tide you wish to edit.
3. Select 'Edit.'
4. You'll be taken to the same screen used to create the tide table. Edit the table as needed.
5. Save your changes by clicking the checkmark in the top-right corner.

## Deleting a tide table
You can delete a tide table using the following steps:

1. Click the tides button in the top-right corner of the screen.
2. Click the menu button to the right of the tide you want to delete.
3. Choose 'Delete.'

## Viewing tides on the map
By default, tides with a location entered will appear on the Navigation tool's radar compass and Photo Maps. To hide/show a tide, follow these steps:

1. Click the tides button in the top-right corner of the screen.
2. Click the menu button to the right of the tide you wish to hide or show.
3. Select 'Hide' or 'Show.'

## Estimating tides without a tide table
If you don't have access to a tide table, you can estimate tides using the Tides tool. Keep in mind that this is just an estimate, so it's always best to consult an officially published tide table when possible. If you know whether the tide is currently high or low, you can create a tide table with a single entry (using the current time and tide level), and the Tides tool will estimate the tidal cycle. This should only be used for short-term predictions, as accuracy decreases further away from the reference tide.

To locate an official tide table, search the Internet for tides at your location. Here are some community-recommended sites offering tide tables:

The Temperature Estimation tool can be used to estimate the temperature at a different elevation.

# Estimating temperature
To estimate the temperature at another elevation, you need to know your current elevation and the current temperature, as well as the elevation at which you want to estimate the temperature.

To estimate the temperature:

1. Either click 'Autofill' or enter the 'Base elevation' (your elevation) and 'Base temperature' (the temperature at your location).
2. Then enter the 'Desired elevation' (the elevation at which you want to estimate the temperature).
3. The estimated temperature will be shown at the top of the screen.
